Our work is built around three interdependent pillars that together create a sustainable and people-centered TB response:

  • Outreach
  • Advocacy
  • Care & Support
  • Partnerships
  • Research
Our outreach activities strengthen the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) by creating awareness in the most vulnerable communities about TB as well as promoting the benefits of accessing government facilities. The communities are benefitted by these activities as they get access to life-saving treatment, which they might have otherwise missed due to lack of awareness and fear of stigma.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES UNDER OUTREACH INCLUDE:

  • Community mobilization to promote participation in TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment adherence, and care services.
  • Awareness generation through kalajathas, IEC shows, interpersonal communication, and community events.
  • Identification of individuals with TB symptoms via meetings with key local influencers (e.g., traditional healers, pharmacists, HIV patients, ex-patients, women's groups, and grassroots organizations).
  • Referral of suspected TB cases to nearby health centres or Designated Microscopy Centers (DMCs) for testing and treatment.

Advocacy includes influencing government institutions and communities to support people diagnosed with TB to better access TB services and complete their treatment without fear of stigma and discrimination. Linking them to welfare schemes is also an important part of advocacy at TB Alert India. The community is also strengthened to access their rights.

SPECIFIC STAKEHOLDERS INCLUDE

TB Alert India care and support activities play a crucial role in providing high quality comprehensive support to persons diagnosed with TB. This includes complete medication, nutrition and emotional/ treatment adherence counseling. These services help patients to complete their full course of treatment and leads to cure and avoidance of drug resistant forms of TB.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES UNDER CARE AND SUPPORT INCLUDE:

  • Enlisting support from all stakeholders irrespective of the distance between them and the patient.
  • Establishing linkages for patients with social-support structures.
  • Ensuring that patients get access to all the critical components of the Continuum of Care (access to health facilities & testing, to diagnosis, support for treatment adherence and stable care).
  • Providing differentiated care and counselling, and understanding the needs of the patients to enable them to complete treatment.
  • Building the capacities of the family and primary care givers to address the needs of patients for successful treatment outcomes.

TBAI believes that partnerships with stakeholders, individuals and institutions can lead to better impact and outcomes. Therefore this component is given important focus and is at three levels.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH COMMUNITIES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS ARE BASIC AND VERY VITAL FOR TBAI. THESE INCLUDE :

  • TB Patients, their caregivers, other community volunteers such as key opinion leaders, patient advocates, community structures such as Self–Help Groups (SHGs), Unions and community volunteers.
  • Healthcare providers from the private sector, chemists and rural healthcare providers.

A significant and long standing partnership is with National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) at the national, state and district levels. TBAI tries to ensure that maximum number of presumptive TB patients access the NTEP services, get diagnosed, access treatment and complete it.

Partnerships with NGOs where resources and capacities are pooled for greater impact and collaborative work.

TB Alert India takes up various research activities independently as well as in collaboration with other academic institutions. The various types of research activities include:

  • Piloting new models of TB service delivery for better outcomes coupled with dissemination of the outcomes for wider replicability.
  • Implementation research and setting of protocols and processes to achieve the planned outcomes and outputs.
